What has happened to my Land

I was born in a land of richness, where the world believes that its valleys are evergreen; the stream runs through my yard and the world’s wild giants run freely in my back yard. I was born in a land of richness, where all the mineral of the world are found, from your gold to your diamond and platinum. We have one of the largest oil plants in my land. I was born in a land where the world believes we are one- we are the same. I was born in a land where anthropologists believe humanity started there. I was born in a land of pseudo-unity created by the outside.

I was born in a land that has countries with the longest known democracy and still has countries under monarchy. I was born in a land where our skin colour was used to separate us from our oppressors but the same skin colour created a commonality amongst us and we united to defeat the superior. I was born in a land that is feud with war in several countries, tribalism rivals in others, but our struggle and skin kept us together for we are able to seek refuge in another. I was born in a land that the tears and blood shed by our ancestors has made us to believe that no blood will be shed in discrimination and oppression; no mother will mourn their sons and daughters due to these wars. I was born in a land that most countries have buried the all their weapons and those still in rivalry are asked to seize fire.

I was born in a land where the world-renowned leaders and struggles fighter emerged. I was born in a land that has produced one of the first female presidents. I was born in a land, which has produced strong female icons that stand head-to-head with their male counterpart in finding solutions on how we can grow. I was born in a land where we have been accused of being westernised, and have forgotten ourselves. I was born in a land where wealth controls all; this reminds of Marx’s theory, which states that, “the rich rules society”. I was born in a land that is known to spreading love, unity and a joint community. I was born in a land that has rich cultural background, and the commonality within each of these cultures is UBUNTU. I was born in a land, which taught me that it takes a village to raise a child and no man is an island. One hand washes the other we are one.

Today I am a scum of ashes on a busy road caused by the anger of those I called my brothers and sisters. Today I have been reduced to ashes because I have been falsely accused to stealing their jobs, women and children. Today I am being swept off the road because of those very same people who once had sought refuge in my house is spitting in my face. Today I am all black not even my family can recognise my face or my form. I have been reduced to not being human that not even a fly will sit on me. Today I bare scars of crimes I did not commit, of anger I did not instigate. Today my mother weeps of the pain of her lost child in a “foreign” land she thought was home. Today my friends try to gather my ashes to pass off as once upon a time me. Today my friends’ mend the wounds on my body for they want to take me home still looking decent.

Today a nation cries, the united front is no more. What have I done to deserve such anguish, such pain of feuds I do not even know how they started. Why have you set me alight, tormented me because of your own insecurities and not knowing how to deal with your own domestic issues. What have I done to you?

Leviticus 19:33-34; “When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the Lord your God.”
